A modern fairy tale...

In many ways, this novel details a fairy-tale world, one with magical animals, the true love of Nelka and Telek, and a woman known as a witch. A traumatized Gretel spends part of the novel in the realm of madness, and for her it ultimately becomes important that she leaves behind her immersion in fantasy and face reality. Hansel, too, must give up playing war and lead his sister in a very real struggle for survival.

Do you think that the author is suggesting that too much belief in fantasy can be an obstacle to reality, or do you think she shows how belief--in fairy tales, magic, and natural beauty--can help us overcome our trials?

i think, that belief in magic and fairy tales can really help us to overcome our problems, and things that bothered us. maybe it doesn't give us solutions, but it helps us to think about our trials one more time and look on them from some other side. fairy tales almost every time have a happy end and that also make us to think "i can do it, everything is going to be okay!"

I think that belief in fairy tales isn't an obstacle to real life. I really like fairy tales and fantasy. This things let us feel better and at least for a moment feel freedom. I think that during the war it was even more important. Fantasy gave people new energy, so when they were back, they tried to survive again and again until the war ended.

I think autor wanted to show us that life is not a fairy tale. Brutality and cruelty are dominating in this book and there is a little space for love.

I think that people needed fantasy in the war times. If they had no fantasy and imagination - they couldn't survive. They had to belief that there can be another better life and they need to survive. Specially small children, and some of they even had no parents, believed in better life, with sweets and candies. Their parents told them that they could live better if they survive and of course children trusted their parents.

I believe that beliefs help us to overcome our trials. Sometimes people in World War II had nothing to choose from, but only imagine or believe that everything will be OK. In my opinion such beliefs can sometimes be a better choice than to face dreadful reality.

It depends on the situation. I think that when there is something you can still do about the situation you shouldn't leave yourself for destiny and imagine that everything is good. But afcourse there are situations when there is no way out and all you can do is just relax and take it easy.

I believe that if you live in dreams and fairie tails youl never progress, become better or have the confidence to change something. You wont try to make your own future
and you will become helpless. You would wait for the knight in shiny armor to save you but he wont always show up and save you ,and wen that happens you become a burned for others and only sink deeper in your troubles. And if you don't change, you will be left alone in you fantasies.

I think that belief in fairy tales and magic can help us overcome our trials, because in this way we can for a moment forget about the real world and our problems and it give us a power to survive.

I think that believing in fairy tales has cons and pros it depends on situation we are into. Sometimes we believe too much in fairy tales, so we forget that reality problems can only be solved in reality. On the other hand, believing in fairy tales lets us imagine our goals and show us how hard we need to go to reach something in this world.

Well, I think that fairy tales are meant to boost one's optimism, that's why they shouldn't be considered as an obstacle, but rather something that might help you see the good things in life (which do really exist), and to sometimes overcome different trials by simply believing in a better situation, a better tomorrow. Though, of course, if your belief in fairy tales makes you drift off into a "Loco" state of mind, then it becomes quite an obstacle which is hard to jump over.

I disagree with vytautas and would like to say that believing in a fairytale or a dream while going though a different time of your life is the only way to survive. Look at Martin Luther King Jr. - he had a difficult life and fought against racism and discrimination. It was really hard for him, but, as he said in one of his most famous speeches, he had a dream. And he was fighting for it, he wanted to make it come true.
I believe that this book states the same thing - maybe you have big problems and feel devastated, but you can dream. Through dreams, you can find peace, get inspired and be confident about yourself once again.
Moreover, sometimes dreaming can "block" your brain from negative emotions and bad memories (Gretel's situation). I think that this "block", covered with dreams, just helps to relax and wait until you're ready to face the reality again.

I totally agree with the statement that belief in magic and fairy tales helps us to overcome our trials. it just helps us to run away from our everyday problems and worries. thanks to them we can be optimistic and always look on the bright side of the life.

I totally agree that some magic helps us to deal with our problems. It also gives us power and faith not to give up, struggle as much as we can and finally achieve our goals.

I think that fantasy, fairy tales and magic can help you to forget your routine and daily problems. Also it can help you to relax, think about beautiful things and imagine whatever you want.. But too much and you can forget who you are and live imaginary life.. K.

I support the statement that the author tries to show us how belief in fantasy sometimes can help us overcome our hard times. I think that person who do believe in natural beauty, fairy tales is more successful than a person who accepts all supernatural things as a nuisance. Okay, science doesn't support supernatural things, but when you believe in something beautiful (fairy tales, fantasy) you put your mind in positive position. It protects your mind from negative affection. People who do not believe in anything what is supernatural seems way too skeptical to me. I see no point in being extra serious about everything. Sometimes you have to get yourself, let's say, back to the childhood and become more naive about magic and so. The living is easy, we must look at it positively

I totally agree with Agata, that belief in fairy tales can help to us to forget our problems. Nowadays, when there isn't such problem as war in my country, we believe in fairy tales or magical things just to relax and to forget bad events. Of course, too much believing can be a big problem, but when the person is in hopeless situation he can be in his 'magical' world...

I agree with Agata. Believing in fairy tales is often helpful, because when you think about a wonderland it helps you forget about everything that is going not the way you wished and when you go back to the reality, you have more strength to overcome your trials. Like she said almost all fairy tales has its happy ending and that makes you believe that everything will be okay, soon.. :)

I agree that fairy tales help us overcome some obstacles but it also has a bad side to it. It gives us what we desire " A happy ending" but life is not that simple and believing that everything will be OK sometimes is not enough, you have to actually do something by yourself. I believe if you take that optimism given by the fairy tail and combine it with your own work, you will see superior results. Sitting doing nothing and believing that everything will end happily won't do you any good.

I agree that if you believe in fairy tales it can help you overcome some problems that you are faced with every day. Those optimistic stories about the good outfighting the bad can give you hope, that your situation will improve in a magical way. I think this hope may be the first step to change your life. Moreover, fairy tales can also help you just forget about the reality for a while and make you feel better. They can help you see the bright side of your situation and realize, that you should enjoy life, no matter what happens.

Fairy tales can inspire our imagination, train it. And this is an advantage, useful thing for all of us. Rich imagination helps in everyday life and supports finding unordinary solutions for complex issues.

Fairy tales is a reflection of the people's lives. Different countries have their own tales in which you can learn or get to know with nation, religion, traditions, culture and specific character qualities. The most important feature of this literature genre is a happy end.
Maybe the writer decided to retell the true story through the tale's genre with tale characters. To survive during the war is a miracle. The conclusion could be: miracles happen only in the fairy tales...

a person is such a creation that always have to believe in something ( you may believe in yourself, God, other people, money, tales, ect.). this story takes place during the World War II. it's horrible time and when you can't trust anything, when all that you believed are gone. you have to find a way to survive and believe in something. it might be only your imagination. Jurate.

sometimes in those fairy tales you can find a lot similarities to your real life.
not every time content of the book is about the good things. That fairy tale is about the war, about horrible things which is really happend.
the imagination sometimes could really help to survive and stay postitive.

I absolutely agree that she shows how belief in fairy tales, magic, and natural beauty, because the most powerful thing is believing in something. I mean hope is the only thing that keeps human alive.

I think that it's not good to always live like in a dream and imagine things that isn't happening. Like that you can just sleep over the present and miss all things that are happening now. But to have some fantasies is really great because like that it becomes more easier to get threw the hardest parts in your life. You're thinking that everything is going to be okay and future will be brighter than events which are happening now. So, it's good to have some dreams but it's important not to cross that line which separates real life from fantasies world. Kornelija

Fairy tales aren't just a huge amount of unreal, maybe sometimes quite silly, things. Authors are sending like a message : read between the lines, buddy. But also we can interpret that miraculous tales are like a refreshment for people who were tortured by cruel reality, like a ray of hope, like a gulp of vitality.

In my opinion, everyone more or less believes in magic. And books such as "The true story of Hansel and Gretel" helps not only to believe in magic but also helps us to overcome our trials. It is sometimes easier to believe in magic than to deny it, espacially in hard times.

It's a very thought provoking storyline, fabricated using historical fiction.

During reading a novel, autor don`t show us magic like illisionist pulls a rabbit out of hat. Does it means that fairy-tales just stiries to babies? I don`t think so. Fairy-tales and especially dreams ('especially' because dreams are fairy-tales too, but the autor of them is you) really help us. Tested on my own experience ;)
There is a lot of blood and cruelty in book, but characters go threw them keeping mind without madness. How can they do it? They just have dreams... So, i think it`s one of the Murphy`s lessons: if you believe in fairy-tales and have dreams, all will be OK and it doesn`t matter what happens around.

In my opinion the author shows how belief in fairy tales and magic can help us overcome our trials.
Personally, I think that Hansel and Gretel just couldn't survive without dreams. Everyone of us needs something to believe in. It helps us forget all our problems and struggles. Moreover, dreams and magic help us believe in a better tomorrow. In many ways, fantasy actually is the only thing which makes our lives brighter. For Hansel, Gretel and definitely other characters imagination and fantasy is the most easiest way how to forgret darklness and pain.

I think that all kinds of fantasy like magic or fairy tales could help us to overcome tough moments in our lifes. For me it's like placebo effect because if we believe that some spells will make us feel better and we will cast a spell we actually start to feel that way.
In my opinion magic is sometimes a good way to run away from the reality and maybe even can help you to forget all of the problems.

I think that we need to believe in fairy tales so that our life won't be that boring. Positive thinking helps us to run away from our everyday problems and worries. Be a child sometimes, be positive, think positive, and life wount be so sour. But of course it depends, there are moments in life where you need to be serious and think soberly

Kalina said...

If you ask me, fairy tales help especially small children to forget about their troubles, but not only them. It's all about moderation. You can't believe in everything that was written in a tale and take it too seriously, but if you're considerate, it may have a positive influence on your viewpoint and give at least a little hope for a better future.

I assume, that our belief in magic and fairy-tales can help us tu overcome some of our problems or difficult situations. Almost all of us likes to read fairy-tales,it's really fun. And when you have a problem, you may yhink about the magical world, at least your mood will be better :) <3

I suppose the author shows how belief in fairy tales can help us to overcome all the difficulties. It's really helpful in some difficult situations to try to be as a child. It's obvious that children have almost no problems. They think that the magician will solve what they did wrong or something like that. So, I believe it's sometimes good to be as a child and leave your problems for your 'Harry Potter' to solve. :))

Well, in my opinion, it's really good to have hopes in things that are beautiful. Because it works if you have some problems or sth like that. You just have to use your imagination, because the world sometimes looks really difficult to live, that's why hopes in beautiful things bring us positive thoughts. Like in fairy tales :).

I am sure, that one of ideas which Murphy wanted to show us is that belief in fantasy can help us. You know a great statement by Walt Disney:"If you can dream it, you can achieve it". I think that without dreams and belief in miracles society couldn't make so many opening in science and other spheres. And belief in good things can help us overcome many everyday problems. But its a little difference between children and adults- Adults hope for the best but children believe in wonders. Murphy showed us hope from the view of children.

Hello :)

I think, that the 'magic part' of a book is really important. We can think about things, which are in the story, but which are not around us, can't be exist (we can do the same about WW 2). Maybe for someone, 'sorcery' helps to move the imagination to the another, better world. Personally, I think, that this book, without a part with a witch won't be as good as it is now.

I think that the author shows us how our belefes-in fairy tales and magic-can help us overcome our trials. Hansel and Gretel belief in these things and it's very helpful for them. For example, they don't give up when they can't find place where to sleep. The nature help them and they can take advantage of it. Thanks to children imagination, they aren't so scared. The forest is for them a great place, where they can hide, play and rest.
Louise Murphy wanted readers to think about magic and all these things which adults don't believe. We should think about it, because sometimes it can change our life.

In my opinion belief in fairy tales, magic and natural beauty can help us overcome our trials because it gives us an opportunity to broaden imagination and teaches that we never should give up when there is no way out. We can use characters' ideas to cope with our problems or partly use them - every fairy tale ends with the words: "and they lived long and happily". Faith in them gives us hope to start another day.

I truly believe that sometimes we need to have a break during stressful and monotonous routine. This break could even be daydreaming, playing and spending time with children ( they are very good at creating dreams) . In my opinion whose persons, who believe and dream about something are much happier, they can create ideas, which help increase their life quality. As personally for me , fairy tales took a big part in my childhood and I still like to read them with my little sister, because it fun and exciting. It is much better than stare at strange nowadays animations, fairy tales give us an opportunity to dream more about unreal things :) JUSTINA, 2012

Dreaming helps us to overcome our trails because we train our brain to think and to look for problem solutions and to find them. When it is hard an difficult for us, dreaming helps us to rise over our sadness, our bad mood, our unsuccessfulness. It helped for children in the story to survive in those cruel days by their imagination. [Dovile 2012]

I am absolutely sure that fairy tales can help us to overcome our difficulties, because it let's us see everything much easier. Sometimes when we try to solve our problems with creativity, it gives us brilliant ideas, or possible solutions. I guess that people who believe in magic and fairy tales are happier than others because they have positive attitude and can reply to everything with humor.

It is said that the first thing to make something happen is to believe that it will happen. So it means that you have to be optimistic about what are you doing. In my opinion, the belief in fairy tales and magic can help us to form that positive thinking which is very needed while talking about overcoming our trials because believing in fairy tales means kind of believing in the happy ending. And when you have the vision of successful result it is easier to go through your problems.
